A Pioneering Artificial Intelligence-Supported Healthcare Project from Our Academics

Our university has added another project to its pipeline of pioneering AI-supported research in healthcare. The project, "Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Analysis of Oral, Ocular, and Intestinal Microbiota in Behçet Disease Using Next-Generation Sequencing Technology," has been awarded funding by the Turkish Institutes of Health (TÜSEB) under the 2025-B-01 call. It will be implemented under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Murat Ceylan, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at our university's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

Mücahit Cihan, an associate professor from our university's Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, is serving as a researcher on the project, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salih Maçin, Prof. Dr. Fatma Hümeyra Yerlikaya Aydemir, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Tunçez Akyürek are also members of the research team from Selçuk University. This project, which will be carried out in collaboration with academics specialized in their fields, is a concrete demonstration of our university's innovative approach to the integration of health sciences and artificial intelligence.

As part of the project, microbiota samples (at the phylum-species level) obtained from the mouth, eye, and intestinal tract will be evaluated using advanced artificial intelligence analysis techniques to support the early diagnosis of Behçet disease. The goal is not only to identify biomarkers but also to monitor microbiota changes over the course of the disease through personalized analyses and, using these data, to explore the potential for probiotic/prebiotic-based treatments.

With this important project, researchers aim not only to develop innovative approaches to diagnosis but also to generate AI-based solutions in healthcare. The university's strong academic infrastructure in health technologies and data science adds significant value to the project in terms of both scientific and societal contributions.

This qualified study, implemented with the contribution of our university and Selçuk University academics, is of great importance in terms of contributing to both scientific research and artificial intelligence-based solutions in the field of health.
