Architectural Structures Met with Fashion

Within the scope of the Fashion, Trends and Architecture course conducted by Bilgehan Yılmaz, a faculty member of our university's Faculty of Architecture and Design, a remarkable fashion show event was held at Enntepe Shopping Mall. In the event, the students presented their original clothing designs, each representing a different architectural structure, to the audience's appreciation.

The fashion show, which brought architecture and fashion together on a common conceptual ground, attracted great attention with the participation of representatives of the Chamber of Architects, academic staff, invited guests interested in architecture, and students. In the designs of the students, it was seen that basic architectural concepts such as architectural forms, structural elements, use of materials, and spatial perception were reinterpreted through the language of textiles and clothing.

Prof. Dr. Bilgehan Yılmaz, who made evaluations about the purpose of the course and the resulting works, emphasized that the main goal of the course is to develop the students' interdisciplinary thinking skills. Yılmaz said, “With the Fashion, Trends and Architecture course, we aim for the students to go beyond being just architects who design buildings and to grasp design as a way of thinking. Architecture is not merely the production of space, but a multi-layered discipline that is in constant interaction with culture, art, trends, and daily life.”

Stating that the students' approach to architectural structures as a piece of clothing strengthens their abstract thinking and conceptualization skills, Yılmaz stated, “Separating a building from its scale, material, and context and relating it to the human body brings a different perspective to the design process. This work enables the students to explain the architectural language with alternative means of expression.”

The event became an important meeting point that not only made the creative and innovative aspect of architectural education visible but also strengthened its interaction. At the end of the fashion show, the participants had the opportunity to closely examine the original designs of the students and make evaluations regarding the outcomes of the course.
